What I Am Wearing

Full skirts are filled with happy memories for me…twirling around in a pink seersucker skirted dress with a starchy net petticoat made inside, trailing the train of a raspberry taffeta ball skirt along the path of Market Square park on my way to dinner and a show, the rustle of my Grandmother’s skirt, sitting close to her on the sofa and listening to her read aloud.

Christian Dior’s bar suit, introduced in 1947 as part of his Corelle line was deemed the “New Look” by Carmel Snow, fashion editor for American Harper’s Bazaar. With this ensemble, Dior was said to have redefined the feminine silhouette; the jacket fit tightly around the waist and flared at the hips, the full, pleated skirt was voluminous. This was a luxurious departure from the lean times of the war just ended when women wore more utilitarian clothes made of minimal, serviceable fabric.

The first photo is of the Daisy afternoon suit in black wool from the 1947 Corelle line and the second is the Justine dress in taffeta and black wool from 1951. (Dior: Christian Dior 1947-1957, published by Assouline)

This photo by Fillippo Fior/Gorunway.com is from the Autumn/Winter 2023 collection for Dior by Maria Grazia Chiuri. She explained her inspiration for the collection is post-war Paris during the 50’s and several women from this time including Christian Dior’s sister, Catherine Dior.

This street style photo by Phil Oh comes with the caption, “The full midi skirt is back in a big way thanks to Prada…”

I made a full skirt using the bottom of a vintage dress pattern and adding a waist band and a heavy duty brass zipper in the back. It seemed like just the thing to wear for breakfast at The Dienger Trading Company at 210 North Main Street in Boerne, Texas.

If you haven’t tried The Dienger Trading Company you should know the coffee is fabulous as are the pastries at the front counter. I love to order their Hill Country Breakfast and sit at a table by the window watching the world go by on Main Street! You can have your eggs the way you like them with toast, breakfast meat, and hash browns with fresh bell peppers and onions mixed in.

After breakfast, if you like, you can browse in the emporium in back where they have great looking clothes and gifts for your home. There are pretty dressing rooms where you can try on clothes you are considering.  If you are shopping for a young person they have some of the nicest children’s clothes and toys ever! There are always some seasonal treats on display such as tiny metal bird sculptures for spring and velvet pumpkins for the fall. I am always inspired by the food and the wares. The people who work here are notably nice and make every visit a treat!

Full skirts continue to create happy memories for me. Try one on yourself and see!

Unique Candelier Enhances Library

The convenience of online shopping sometimes makes it possible for one to purchase an item for which they have no immediate need. The thought of a candelier (a chandelier using candles rather than electric bulbs) has always appealed to me. When I found one online it was purchased with the thought that a use for it would develop over time. Until then, it remained in the box behind a door in the studio.

Lace Skirt in a Bespoke Style

While waiting at the cutting table at a fabric store in downtown San Antonio my attention was drawn to this pale griege rose covered lace. A closer look revealed scalloped edges; it had to come with me. The man cutting the lace remarked on its beauty and said he could see it as a full skirt in the style of the fifties – think Dior bar suit skirt.
